Dog Gear
Martingale collars were originally designed for sight hounds, such as Whippets and Greyhounds, because their heads are smaller than their necks, allowing them to slip easily out of regular buckle collars. A martingale is designed to be adjusted to the dog's neck so that it is worn comfortably loose when there is no tension on it, and pulled tight enough so a dog can't slip out when there is tension. We use these collars exclusively when training, and particularly when walking, since there is no chance of a dog getting loose. *Please note that these are not recommended as the only collar for multi-dog households. Entanglement in the chain loop is common when playing, so a regular buckle collar for day-to-day use is advised.* Available colours are Navy, Green, Raspberry, Turquoise and Burgundy. Sizes are Small in 3/4" width (for neck size 8"-13"), Medium in 1" width (for neck size 12"-18"), and Large in 1" width (for neck size 17"-26").
Long lines are recommended for recall training, so that during the initial phases the dog is never completely out of your control. They're also great in scenarios where you can't let your dog run free, but want them to have more room to roam than a regular leash will allow. We carry regular nylon lines in 40' lengths and 1" width for large dogs, and lighter-weight polypropylene lines, in 40' with 1/2" width for smaller dogs.
Putting a backpack on your dog when you take them for a walk or hike is an excellent way to help them burn off excess energy. It's also a very practical tool, allowing your dog to carry their own water, food, treats, toys and anything else you want them to. We carry a selection of sizes and colours in the Urban Adventure style and Secure Fit style. The Urban Adventure backpack is ideal if all you do is take your dog for a walk in a town or city environment. It's a smaller, lighter-weight pack for short trips. The Secure Fit pack is the perfect thing for hiking in the woods and long trips. It's a much tougher and larger pack, and can hold significantly more items. The most popular weight to put in dog backpacks are water bottles, although you should start off with an empty pack to get your dog used to wearing it first. When they're comfortable with wearing a pack, start loading up some items. Whatever you put in should never exceed 15% of your dog's weight, and the ideal amount is 5-10%. If you're not sure of the amounts, follow the guidelines on this chart (**always gauge whether to go maximum or minimum based on your dog's level of fitness and what you are asking of them. If your dog is in great health and you're going for an easy walk, load up on the maximum weight. If you're going for a strenuous hike, go for minimum.)
Training treats are a wonderful motivator for your dog to learn new things. We carry Wodema's Trumps Training Treats in Beef & Cheese and Lamb & Rice flavours. Wodema is a Canadian company that uses only federally inspected, human food-grade ingredients. Each tiny morsel has less than 1.5 calories, and these semi-moist treats are something most dogs devour with great pleasure. They have our pack's seal of approval!
